Opposition Senator Malaka Parker has been called to the Bar of England and Wales, a milestone that places her among the ranks of qualified barristers entitled to practise in the courts of that jurisdiction.

The call took place on Thursday, 8 October which is a significant achievement in the senator's legal and public service career.

Senator Parker completed the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) at BPP University in 2025, earning a Distinction in both her Legal Professional Studies and the Bar course itself.

Certified in Mediation, Arbitration and Negotiation

Alongside her Bar training, Senator Parker completed professional training as a Mediator, Arbitrator and Negotiator, and is now certified in all three disciplines through the ADR International accredited programme, credentials which further strengthen her expertise in dispute resolution and alternative legal processes.

“The Bar course is a demanding and rigorous academic programme. I completed it while still running my home in Antigua, managing my clients, and dealing with all the responsibilities that come with both, and all the challenges of public life,” Senator Parker said. “It required discipline, sacrifice and an unwavering belief in the goal, but I am proud that I was able to do it.”

‘Years of Hard Work, Resilience and Faith’

“Being called to the Bar is the result of years of hard work, resilience and faith. It is a deeply personal achievement, but also a reminder that with determination and support, it is possible to pursue excellence and still serve your country and community,” Senator Parker said. “This accomplishment feels well earned, and I am grateful for the journey.”

Senator Parker, a former banker and the first female president of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU), is serving her second stint in the Upper House. She first sat as a government senator from 2009 to 2014 under the United Progressive Party (UPP) administration and was sworn in as an Opposition Senator on 18 May 2026. She continues to advocate for accountable governance, social justice and national development.
