From the classrooms of Miss Francis School to a PhD. programme in one of America’s most prestigious universities, Dr. Carolyn Providence has completed a journey that makes Antigua and Barbuda immensely proud.

Dr. Providence graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in Nutritional Sciences from Rutgers University in New Jersey, USA, on May 17, 2026 — the culmination of years of academic dedication, intellectual rigour, and an unwavering commitment to the betterment of communities through food, health, and public policy.

Rooted in Antigua

Dr. Providence’s story is deeply woven into the fabric of Antiguan society. Her educational journey began at Miss Francis School, continued through T.O.R. Memorial, Antigua Girls’ High School, and Antigua State College — institutions that have shaped some of the nation’s finest minds and that can today count a PhD-holding nutritional scientist among their alumni.

She grew up in Sutherlands and worshipped at Good Shepherd Anglican Church, and her roots run deep across the length and breadth of the twin-island nation. Dr. Providence is a proud descendant of the Mason family from St. John’s (town), the Richard family from Seaview Farm, the Lewis family from Potters Village, and the Providence family from All Saints — with lineage extending to St. Vincent.

Specialising in hunger and food policy, Dr. Providence brings to her work a rare combination of personal connection and professional expertise. She will continue to develop food, nutrition, and public health policies for the United States of America, Antigua and Barbuda, and the wider Caribbean — work that carries profound implications for some of the region’s most pressing social and health challenges.

At a time when chronic disease, food insecurity, and nutrition-related illness represent growing burdens across the Caribbean, Dr. Providence’s expertise is not merely academic — it is urgently needed.

A Nation Celebrates

The achievement of a doctoral degree from Rutgers University — a world-class research institution — is a milestone that reflects not only personal brilliance and perseverance, but the foundation of excellence laid by Antigua and Barbuda’s schools, churches, and communities.

Congratulations, Dr. Carolyn Providence. May your work continue to nourish nations.
