An Air Peace aircraft landed at the V.C. Bird International Airport tonight, June 28, apparently arriving here from Nigeria via Barbados. The flight is said to have surprised some airport workers, as Prime Minister Gaston Browne had not permitted last month’s inaugural flight to land in Antigua and Barbuda, citing concerns about the Ebola outbreak in several African countries. Instead, passengers bound for Antigua were flown in via LIAT 20 after being screened. In response to the outbreak, there was even talk of the Government reactivating COVID-19 health protocols at the airport; but REAL News could not confirm their actual implementation ahead of Sunday night’s landing or determine what had prompted the prime minister’s change of heart. Last month, May 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified this outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on account of the virus’ rapid spread and regional risks. For this particular epidemic, caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain, the agency notes that there are currently no approved vaccines or targeted treatments.
