Patients seeking outpatient and radiology services at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre can now begin the appointment process from home, as the nation’s primary public hospital introduces an online appointment request system designed to reduce unnecessary in-person visits and improve access to care.
The new facility allows patients to submit appointment requests digitally through the hospital’s website, with separate forms available for Outpatient Clinic and Radiology services. The move means that for many patients, the first step in accessing these services will no longer require a physical trip to the hospital.
The system does not automatically confirm appointments. After submitting their information online, patients must wait to be contacted by hospital staff to finalise the scheduling process.
The hospital has not indicated whether the online option will reduce waiting times — a longstanding concern among patients and healthcare advocates — but the initiative addresses a more immediate frustration: the requirement to make an in-person visit simply to request an appointment, which has placed an added burden on patients who may live far from the hospital, have limited transportation, or face mobility challenges.
