A Fort Road resident is in police custody after investigators descended on his property early Sunday morning and walked away with what police are calling a large cache of suspected stolen goods — a haul so extensive it is believed to be linked to multiple burglaries across the island.
The operation was carried out by members of the Criminal Investigations Department Task Force around 6:30 a.m. following the execution of a search warrant at a residence in the Fort Road area.
What officers found inside was an extensive assortment of items believed to have been stolen from various locations across the island. The recovered goods included electronic devices, household appliances, construction materials, hardware supplies, power tools, generators, air-conditioning units and cellular phones.
Among the specific items seized were televisions, stoves, microwave ovens, blenders, pressure cookers, rice cookers, ceiling fans, air fryers, compressors, chainsaws, drills, sanders, weed trimmers, water pumps, projectors, bathroom fixtures, fencing wire, electrical supplies and several tool kits.
The occupant of the property was arrested on suspicion of larceny and receiving stolen property and was taken to the St. John’s Police Station, where he remains in custody assisting investigators.
Police believe the recovered items may be linked to a number of reported burglaries and thefts and are now working to trace their origins and identify their rightful owners.
Law enforcement officials are urging members of the public who have recently reported items stolen from homes, businesses, construction sites or storage facilities to contact the CID. Individuals who believe any of the recovered property may belong to them are being asked to visit the department with proof of ownership.
The seizure is being viewed as a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to combat property crimes, with investigators examining whether the recovery is connected to multiple theft reports made in recent months.
Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is encouraged to contact the Criminal Investigations Department at 462-3913 or 462-3914, or report anonymously through Crimestoppers at 800-TIPS (8477).
