A 67-year-old woman has reported being raped by an intruder who allegedly forced his way into her home in the early hours of the morning last week, in a deeply disturbing incident that has intensified public concern over the safety of vulnerable residents in Antigua and Barbuda.

What the Victim Reported

According to police, the woman reported that the intruder forced his way into her home at around 3:30 a.m. last Wednesday. She told investigators that she had attempted to keep the man out by securing her door with wire, but that he broke through the chain lock and forced his way inside.

The woman said the intruder raped her and threatened to cut her throat if she screamed before fleeing the scene following a struggle.

She described the suspect as a dark-skinned man with upright hair who was not wearing a mask, and indicated to police that she recognised him.

Police Response

Police processed the scene, and the matter has been referred to the Gender Affairs Division, which handles cases of this nature. Efforts by media to obtain a further update from police on the status of the investigation were unsuccessful at the time of publication. No arrest had been publicly confirmed.

A Crime That Strikes at the Most Vulnerable

The attack on an elderly woman in the supposed safety of her own home represents one of the most distressing categories of crime a community can face, and it comes amid a sustained wave of violent incidents across Antigua and Barbuda in recent weeks — including home invasions, shootings, robberies, and assaults that have left residents increasingly fearful for their safety.

For elderly residents living alone in particular, the incident is a sobering reminder of their vulnerability, and it is likely to amplify public calls for increased police patrols, improved community safety measures, and a more visible law enforcement response in residential areas during the overnight hours.

Survivors of sexual violence in Antigua and Barbuda can seek confidential support and assistance through the Directorate of Gender Affairs, which operates a crisis response service. Anyone with information that may assist the police investigation is urged to contact the Criminal Investigations Department at 462-3913 or 462-3914, or report anonymously through Crimestoppers at 800-TIPS (8477).
