Police Commissioner expects cooperation of bars and supermarkets in prohibition of alcohol sales on Good Friday

As residents prepare for the traditional gathering of family and friends on Good Friday, April 7, they are being reminded that the sale of alcohol that day is illegal.

In a notice published on Wednesday by the Police Administration, the public is put on notice that the Licensing (Intoxicating Liquor) (Amendment) Act, No. 9 of 2014 – specifically Section 32 – prohibits the sale of alcohol on this holy day.

Accordingly, “the owners and operators of bars, supermarkets, shops, and other places that were granted licenses for the sale of alcoholic beverages must desist from engaging in the sale of alcohol starting from the period of midnight Thursday, 6 April, through the entire day of Good Friday.”

As is done every year, the Commissioner of Police is appealing to all persons to conform with the regulations as set out under the law.

“Failure to comply may result in the revocation of licenses and other legal actions taken against the owners and operators,” the notice warns.

It is understood that the law does not prohibit the consumption of alcohol on Good Friday; so persons may legally drink in their homes or other gathering places, provided that the purchase was made ahead of the holiday.
